How it works
A whole chapter, read as one thing.
Most tools translate a page at a time, and it shows: the same character picks up three names, and a speech balloon the page break cut in half comes back broken at both ends. These are the three places KomaLume does the work differently — each one is a mechanism you can check, not a claim about quality.
A chapter, not a pile of pages
The same character keeps the same name from page 1 to page 40, and a sentence that carries over the page turn arrives whole.
Before a single page is translated, the engine reads the whole chapter once and writes down the names, places and terms it finds. Every page is then translated against that list, so the hero is not called three different things in one chapter — the usual failure when each page is sent off on its own.
Each page is also given the source text of its neighbours — two pages back and one forward — to read for sense but never to translate. A line that begins in the last balloon of one page and finishes on the next is therefore translated by something that has seen both halves.
This is what the cheapest mode leaves out, and the difference is quality rather than speed: the one-credit mode treats every page as its own island, on purpose, and says so.
Balloons the page break cut in half
A balloon split across two pages is rebuilt before it is read, not patched up afterwards.
When a long episode is cut into pages, the cut lands wherever it lands — often through the middle of a speech balloon. Every other tool translates each page on its own, so the detector sees half a balloon: the top half comes back clipped at the page edge and the bottom half spills over the artwork.
It cannot be repaired afterwards either. A horizontal cut goes through the row of glyphs, not just the balloon, so each half holds the top or the bottom of a line of text and neither can be read. There is nothing to join back together.
So the pixels are put back together first: the tail of one page and the head of the next are joined into a band, translated as though it were a page of its own, then cut at the seam and laid back over both. It runs by itself, only where text actually meets the page edge on both sides of the cut, and a chapter with no such balloon spends nothing on it.
Long strips, cut here instead of by you
Send the episode as it came. The strip is cut into pages on arrival and the balloons the cut lands on are put back together.
A webtoon episode is one image hundreds of times taller than it is wide. Lettering cannot be removed cleanly from a shape like that, which is why every tool asks for pages — and why the job of slicing has always landed on the reader, at a fixed height, with the cut falling wherever it falls.
That work happens here now, and it happens on your own machine: the strip is cut into page-shaped pieces as you drop it in, so the giant image is never uploaded at all. The pieces are cut to roughly the proportions of an ordinary page rather than at some fixed height, and any balloon a cut does land on is rebuilt by the same repair that handles pages sliced by hand.
How many pages it became, and what that costs, is on the screen before anything is spent.
